What is MRI ?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a painless test that uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed images of the organs, bones, muscles and tissues in your body. No radiation is produced during an MRI exam, unlike X-Rays.
Why MRI is Required ?
Clinicians suggest MRI to help diagnose or monitor the treatment for many different conditions.
- It’s the most frequently used imaging test of the brain and spinal cord. It's often performed to help diagnose Aneurysms of cerebral vessels, Multiple sclerosis, Spinal cord disorders, Stroke, Tumors, Brain injury from trauma
- Breast cancer screening for women who are at a higher risk of the disease.
- It is performed for bone and joints to evaluate disk abnormalities in the spine, bone infections, tumors of the bones and soft tissues, joint abnormalities caused by traumatic or repetitive injuries
- For heart or blood vessels it determines the size and function of the heart’s chambers, thickness and movement of the walls of the heart, evaluate the damage caused by heart attacks or heart disease, inflammation or blockages in the blood vessels.
- It is done to check tumors or other abnormalities of many organs in the body like liver, kidneys, Pancreas, Uterus, Ovaries, Prostate.
What are the benefits of a MRI ?
- It takes images of any part of the body (e.g., head, joints, abdomen, legs, etc.), in any imaging direction
- It provides better soft tissue contrast than CT and can differentiate better between fat, water, muscle, and other soft tissue than CT (CT is usually better at imaging bones)
- It does not rely on radiation but sound waves to produce images of the body
What are the types of MRI ?
- Functional MRI - Functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional MRI (fMRI) measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow
- Cardiac MRI - Cardiac MRI gives good information about the severity of a particular heart condition and helps identify how the person is likely to do in the future. These include coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease (in children and adults), inherited heart conditions (such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or dilated cardiomyopathy), heart valve disease and cardiac tumours.
- MRI of the Breast - Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast — or breast MRI — is a test used to detect breast cancer and other abnormalities in the breast. The test can detect :
- breast cancer
- diagnose and evaluate breast tumors
- determine the size of the tumor after an initial breast cancer diagnosis
- monitor how well the chemotheraphy is working
- find a rupture of a breast implant.
- Magnetic Resonance Venography (MRV) – agnetic resonance venography (MRV) is an imaging test that is used to visualize veins in the body. Veins are the blood vessels that bring blood from your body's organs back to your heart and lungs so the blood can be replenished with oxygen and nutrients. The MRV assess blood flow and detects detrimental abnormalities such as blood clots.
- Magnetic Resonance Angiogaphy (MRA) - Magnetic resonance angiography is used to generate images of blood vessels and blood flow. It diagnose any abnormal narrowing in blood vessels, vessel wall dilatations or at risk of rupture & any other abnormalities. Unlike traditional angiography that involves placing a tube (catheter) into the body, MRA is noninvasive.
- Non-Contrast MRA - An MRA can be used with a contrast medium (medical dye) or without. When it is used without dye, it is called a non-contrast MRA.
Preparation of MRI Scan
- If pictures are being taken of patient liver or pancreas, do not eat or drink for 4 hours before the test.
- Let our staff know if the patient :
- Are or think that she could be pregnant
- Are breastfeeding
- Have a cardiac pacemaker, or other implanted device , such as an insulin pump or stimulator
- Have anaeurysm clips
- Have metal shartpnel or fragments inside patient body
- Have a replacement joint or plate
- Have an allergy to contrast medicine
- Remove any items that can be affected by the magnet. These may include hairpins, jewelry, coins, dentures, keys or credit cards. Please leave valuable belongings at home.
- The may be asked to change into a gown
- The patient may have an IV (intravenous) put in his/her arm to give contrast medicine during the test.
- If being in a small space scares the patient, talk to patient’s doctor before the test. The doctor may order some medicine to help patient relax.
- The patient can eat, drink and take medicines before the test.
During MRI Scan
- The patient will lie on a table in the middle of a long tube-like machine.
- The table slides into he the opening of the machine until the part of patient body to be checked is in the center
- If patient is having test of his/her head, he/she may need to wear a helmet.
- The patient need to lie very still during the test. He/She may be asked to hold his/her breath for a few seconds during the test.
- The machine may make a loud noise while pictures are taken. The patient may be given earplugs to wear.
- The patient can talk to the staff through a speaker. The patient can tell the staff immediately he/she need help or is uncomfortable.
After MRI Scan
- The patient may drive home after the scan, if the he/she is not given medicine to help relax during the scan. If the medicine given to patient to help relax, an adult must accompany the patient to take his/her home. It is not safe for a patient to drive or leave alone.
- If the patient was given contrast medicine during the test, drink 6 to 8 glasses of liquid to flush the contrast out of his /her body. Good liquids to drink are water, milk and juice. Limit the amount of caffeine like coffee, tea and soft drinks.
- Scan results will be shared in the form of report. The doctor will share the results with the patient.
